Locus of continuity
(BFA solo art exhibition project-2009, Kathmandu University School of Arts, Centre for Art and Design)
Am I walking with the line or is the line walking with me?
This query continues, but what remains is the inseparable bond between the line and life.
My work is about this bonding with lines. Life continues on its own locus- a line. People come across hindrances, barriers, twists, and turns; yet flexibly, it moves on. Each moment of the line is unique and each movement is different. There is no breakage in its natural growth. People’s attempts to control their frustrations are accompanied by moments which flow. The line overlaps, comes back, and yet never stops. This continuity of lines is the essence of nature. My work is an attempt to find this balance between the human need to control and the inevitability of continuity.
My initial works began with a fascination towards the organic quality of electric wires which are haphazardly hung on poles around Kathmandu. I soon realized my query and sensed my discovery. This fascination guided me to explore with different media, searching for a process of continuity. Sometimes, even the discontinuation of paint from my paint brush frustrated me. So my exploration with various media such as yarn, dripping techniques, and jute helped me to maintain the flow in my process.
My line is not only represents my physical movement but also depicts a force within me. Through this process, I perceived a line not just as an element of drawing but as a complete entity in itself. Thus the line is my life and life is a line.
